St. Alphonsus 2018 Lenten Fish Fry

The St. Alphonsus family is cooking up delicious, homemade food for its 11th Annual Fish Fry — a major fund-raiser for our parish and school that raised nearly $100,000 in 2018. The food is SO good that St. Alphonsus was declared the winner of The Ultimate Pittsburgh Fish Fry in a contest sponsored by Click here for the story.

On every Friday evening during Lent, you will find scores of dedicated volunteers working to serve over a thousand meals that include your choices of fried fish or baked fish or fried shrimp (you also can get fish as a sandwich), macaroni and cheese or french fries or baked potato, coleslaw or applesauce, New England clam chowder or tomato florentine, and a beverage. You can also buy items a la carte and we offer desserts for an additional fee.

The meals are served in our school cafeteria.

Every year, customers tell us they keep coming back because St. Alphonsus has the most delicious food!

The cost in 2018 remains the same as last year: $10 for adult dinners and $2 for a child’s dinner. You can dine in or order takeout.

On Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14, we offer takeout only from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The schedule for Fridays is 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. with the exception of Good Friday, March 30, when we begin serving at 3:30 p.m.

The Fish Fry has become a tradition for many St. Alphonsus families — a time to come together for fellowship as well as fund-raising.

As Fish Fry Chair Frank McSorley will tell you: The volunteers are the key to an incredible Fish Fry operation. In 2016, those volunteers prepared and cooked over 700 pounds of cod, 70 pounds of shrimp, served over 57 gallons of soup and 140 pounds of coleslaw EVERY Friday night.

We need volunteers to do everything from cutting up the fish to serving the meals to cleaning up the kitchen.

For a typical Friday Fish Fry, the work begins on Wednesday with volunteers coming together to thaw the fish. Thursday is a time for volunteers to cut up the fish and prepare condiments and drinks.

On Friday morning, volunteers are needed between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. to bread the fish and shrimp. In the afternoon, the dining room is set up; to-go fish sandwich buns are wrapped; coleslaw and applesauce are prepared; stations are set up to serve soup, desserts and beverages; volunteers take phone orders for takeout; dishes, pots and pans are cleaned.

And then we start to serve the dinners!

That takes waiters/waitresses, food servers, cooks, packers for to-go meals, food expeditors, cashiers, as well as people to clean up the dining room and kitchen throughout the evening.

Altogether, we need over 150 volunteers every Friday night to make the Fish Fry work like a well-oiled machine.

If you’re interested in supporting the Fish Fry with a donation, please consider becoming a Food Sponsor or Corporate (Placemat) Sponsor.

You can become a Food Sponsor by covering the cost of a menu item for one or more of the weekly dinners. For example: To sponsor shrimp for one night is $400. Click here for the 2018 Fish Fry Sponsor form that lists items and prices. 

A large board will be on display at the Fish Fry showing all of the sponsors for each week.

Groups can pool their contributions and sponsor an item together. For example,

Corporate Sponsorships ($250 placemat ad)

Buying a placemat ad is a great way to advertise and be seen by over 1,000 people weekly!

Each placemat displays our corporate sponsors for all seven weeks with an ad that is approximately the size of a business card.
