Bethlehem Haven Honors St. Alphonsus with Compassion Award
Bethlehem Haven honored St. Alphonsus with a “Compassion” award at its Community Appreciation Event on Oct. 17.
The Compassion award is for “deep awareness of the suffering of another and the wish to relieve it.”
Our parish has been active at Bethlehem Haven since October 2001 when parishioner Barb Griffith started an outreach ministry.
Bethlehem Haven provides a number of services including emergency shelter; transitional housing; permanent supportive housing; medical, dental, obstetrics and mental health services; as well as employment services to women in the Pittsburgh area.
St. Alphonsus is responsible for providing dinner on the second Saturday of every month. Our volunteers provide the food and prepare the various dishes at home. They divide the responsibilities each month and then meet at St. Alphonsus after the 5 p.m. Mass. Two or three volunteers then go to the emergency shelter to serve the meal to about 30 women.
In July parishioners also generously donated linens, towels, women’s clothing and more to Bethlehem Haven.
